The BC government recently passed an Order in Council to increase the minimum wage in BC on June 1, 2023. The increases affect many employees and are tied to the consumer price index, which rose by 6.9% in 2022, the highest rise in 40 years.
The increases are as follows:
- The general minimum hourly wage will increase to $16.75 from last year’s minimum of $15.65. This is the minimum wage that applies to most workplaces in BC.
- The minimum daily wage for live-in home support workers and live-in camp leaders will increase to $124.73 and $133.69 respectively.
- The minimum monthly wage for resident caretakers will raise to $1,002.53 plus $40.17 per unit for caretakers responsible for 9-60 residential suites, and to $3,414.85 for caretakers responsible for over 60 residential suites.
- Finally, farm workers employed on a piece work basis will also see similar increases depending on the particular crop they harvest.
As a reminder, these increases do not apply to federally regulated employers, where the minimum wage was increased to $16.65 on April 1, 2023.
