BCTF to Take Control of Teacher Participation in School Planning Councils

June 10, 2002

The BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) has made it clear that it intends to take control of teacher participation in School Planning Councils. The requirement for a School Planning Council in every school was established by the recently enacted School Amendment Act, 2002. The statute makes provision for a teacher representative from the school staff on that school’s council, but makes no provision for union representation. In a recent “School Staff Alert” BCTF conveys the “advice” of its representative assembly to teachers that the staff representative on councils be a member of the union leadership. BCTF also sets out “guidelines” for teacher members of a School Planning Council.
