$350-million Overtime Claim

A class action lawsuit has been launched against Scotiabank claiming the bank failed to pay personal bankers for overtime work. The lawsuit covers thousands of current and former employees of the bank.

This is the second such lawsuit that the two lawyers pursuing the claim have brought against a bank. CIBC faces a claim of $600-million involving tellers. The representative of the class action, Cindy Fulawka, alleges that unpaid overtime is common at the bank among non-management employees. She claims that, on average, she worked 10 to 15 hours per week over and above that allowed under the law before overtime takes effect.

This lawsuit serves as an important reminder to employers to ensure they comply with legislation pertaining to overtime payment for employees.
