BCTF Held in Contempt of Court

On October 9, 2005, the B.C. Supreme Court found the B.C. Teachers Federation (BCTF) in contempt of court for engaging in illegal strike action. Members of the BCTF breached an order of the Labour Relations Board requiring teachers to immediately resume their duties and work schedules. (The scope of that order is set out in a previous entry on Harris & Company’s “Legal News” section.)

The hearing to determine a penalty for the BCTF’s ongoing job action will be held October 13, 2005. The union has been ordered to produce its financial statements for the purpose of the hearing. Madam Justice Brenda Brown, in an oral decision, instructed the BCTF there will be no “free days” if picketing continues.
