An associate of Harris & Company, Ryan received his Bachelor of Business Administration, with a specialization in Human Resource Management, from Simon Fraser University in 1997. In 1999, he received his Masters of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University, with a focus in labour relations. During that program, Ryan published a research project titled, "An Evaluation of the Efficacy of the B.C. Labour Relations Board Remedial Certification Provisions."

Prior to attending law school, Ryan worked for a large crown corporation in British Columbia, where he gained invaluable experience as a management-side labour relations advisor. He is currently a member of the board of directors for the Burnaby Children’s Centres Society, a non-profit children’s day care facility. In addition, Ryan has been employed since 2001 as an instructor at Capilano College, teaching a course in labour and employment relations. He has also taught the same course at Simon Fraser University.

Ryan received his LL.B. from the University of British Columbia in 2005 and returns each year to coach the UBC Labour Arbitration Moot team. He began working at Harris & Company as a summer student in 2003 and, after articling with the firm, was called to the BC Bar and became an associate lawyer in May of 2006.
