Matthew Cooperwilliams represents clients in all areas of employment and labour law, with particular emphasis on wrongful dismissal cases, restrictive covenant and post-employment competition litigation, injunctions, labour relations board matters and collective agreement arbitrations. He is an Adjunct Professor of Employment Law at the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Law. He has extensive experience as counsel before all levels of the British Columbia courts, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Federal Court, the British Columbia and Canada Labour Relations Boards, the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal, and boards of arbitration.
Matthew was born in Pinawa, Manitoba and he received a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Manitoba in 1987. He was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1988 and admitted to the Roll of Solicitors of England and Wales in 2001. Prior to joining Harris & Company, Matthew practised for two years as a solicitor in London, England with a major international law firm and he was a partner in the Labour and Employment Group in a national Canadian law firm.
Matthew is the Chair of the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC's annual Employment Law Conference. In 2003, Matthew established the Employment Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association – BC Branch. and he was the first Chair of the Section in 2004.
Matthew speaks regularly to client, professional, human resources and labour relations groups, including the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC, the British Columbia Human Resources Management Association, the Canadian Association of Counsel to Employers, and commercial conference providers. He has also provided comments about employment law issues for national magazines, radio and newspapers.
