Matthew represents clients in all areas of employment and labour law, with particular emphasis on collective agreement arbitrations, wrongful dismissal cases, restrictive covenant and post-employment competition litigation, labour relations board matters and injunctions. He brings to his practice extensive experience as counsel before statutory tribunals, boards of arbitration, all levels of the British Columbia courts, and the Federal Court.
Matthew was born in Pinawa, Manitoba and he received a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Manitoba in 1987. He was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1988 and admitted to the Roll of Solicitors of England and Wales in 2001. Prior to joining Harris & Company, Matthew practised for two years as a solicitor in London, England with a major international law firm and he was a partner in the Labour and Employment Group in a national Canadian law firm.
In 2003, Matthew established the Employment Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association – BC Branch. He was the first Chair of the Section in 2004. Matthew is also a member of the National Executive of the Labour and Employment Section of the CBA and the BC Human Resources Management Association.
Matthew speaks regularly to client, professional, human resources and labour relations groups, including the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC, the British Columbia Human Resources Management Association and commercial conference providers. He has also provided comments about employment law issues for newspapers and radio.
