Eric was born in the Shetland Islands, Scotland, and completed his education in Canada. He received a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of British Columbia in 1972 and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1973.
Since then, Eric has practised in the areas of labour, employment law and administrative law.
Eric is a Vice Chair of the Board of Governor's of the Business Council of British Columbia and, for a period of time in 1990 and 1991, he served as Senior Vice President of The Jim Pattison Group. He is also the Chair of the Justice Institute Foundation.
Eric was appointed as a Queen's Counsel in 1997.
Eric is also a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
On December 18, 2002, Eric was appointed by the Minister of Skills, Development and Labour to a Committee of Special Advisors to review a number of issues arising under the BC Labour Code and to make recommendations to the Minister with respect to those issues. During 2005, he served on a task force appointed by the Federal Minister of Transport to inquire into the container trucking industry in the West Coast Ports.
Eric has been recognized by the Lexpert organization in Canada as one of the top 500 lawyers in Canada. He also is recognized by Euromoney in England as one of the leading labour lawyers in the world. He is listed in the inaugural US Directory of the Best Lawyers in Canada and he is also listed in the International Who's Who of Management Labour and Employment lawyers.
